Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs), combining the strength and durability of reinforced concrete with the versatility and energy efficiency of rigid insulation, provide an ideal solution for commercial and institutional buildings. With a lower first cost than wood and steel construction, ICFs improve occupant safety, fire resistance and noise transmission for office, hospital, school and retail buildings, among others. This presentation will address how the thermal properties of ICFs, combining the high R-value of rigid insulation with the thermal mass of concrete, offer building owners significant energy savings over the long term. The presentation will also provide guidance on how to minimize the cost of ICF construction to take full advantage of these benefits, resulting in investments that are secure and generate long-term value.

Donn C. Thompson is the Senior Director, Building Innovations for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Based in McHenry, IL, he supports the Build with Strength program, demonstrating the first cost and long-term advantages of ready mixed concrete building systems throughout eight Midwest states. A licensed architect and LEED accredited, Donn has over 40 years of practical experience in design and construction. For the last 24 years he has worked in the cement and concrete industry holding a variety of technical and promotional support positions.
Brandon Wray is the Director of Building Innovations for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association in California. In this role, Brandon promotes concrete and concrete technologies throughout the design community with a special focus on sustainability. Prior to joining the NRMCA, Brandon worked as a civil engineer for US Concrete where he assisted in developing, evaluating, and launching various concrete technologies throughout North America. Most recently, he was a design manager on the project management team at Clark Pacific, a world renowned precast concrete designer and manufacturer.
