A major milestone was achieved in the transformation of Ralph Wilson Park, as a 266-foot pedestrian bridge was successfully installed over the I-190 in Buffalo, New York. Designed with community input to enhance access to the waterfront, the new bridge will serve as a pedestrian and bicycle gateway into the park, scheduled to open in early 2026. The 100+ acre Ralph Wilson Park, formerly LaSalle Park, is undergoing extensive renovations to create a world-class, accessible public space.

The bridge installation began on October 5 and concluded the next morning, involving a coordinated effort among emergency services, state, and local partners. The old pedestrian bridge was removed by crane, and the new 220-ton steel arch bridge—constructed in Italy and shipped in four parts via the Erie Canal—was lifted into place using two gantry cranes and a 100-ton rough terrain crane.

Designed by schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), known for sustainable, long-span structures, the bridge combines Buffalo’s architectural heritage with innovative design. The enclosed arch protects pedestrians from traffic below, offering a safe and inviting entrance to the park. Upcoming work on the bridge will include adding a concrete deck, guardrails, hand railings, and LED lighting.
