Hatfield Group Engineering, a New York-based, WBE-certified, multidisciplinary engineering firm, is thrilled to announce the launch of our Chicago studio. HGE Chicago is led by Koz Sowlat, SE, PE, and Robert J. Diebold, SE, PE, two world-class structural engineers who have co-led their firm, Sowlat Structural Engineers, since its founding in 2004. HGE Chicago was established on May 4, 2024, to better serve HGE clients, by leveraging Koz Sowlat and Rob Diebold’s structural expertise, and by bringing HGE’s structural, MEP/FP, and facade engineering services to the Midwest.
Sowlat, Diebold and HGE founding partner, Erleen Hatfield, PE, FAIA, F. ASCE, worked together while at Perkins and Will and Thornton Tomasetti and are reunited to provide their expertise in the design of large, complex buildings with fast-track schedules, leading to high-quality built projects.
Over the past two decades, Sowlat and Diebold have designed tall and award-winning buildings, including:
- 465 North Park Drive, Chicago, a 49-story residential tower, featuring a sloshing liquid damper provided for added comfort,
- 100 South State Street, Chicago, expansion of a five-story office building and re-use of neighboring, 130-year-old foundations, within a tight, historic site in the Loop,
- The Collection, Honolulu, a 43-story residential tower, and,
- One Uptown, Dallas, a 20-story residential tower, featuring a glass swimming pool.
Sowlat has served as chief structural engineer on many prominent projects, including McCormick Place South Hall and Grand Concourse, Chicago, a 3.3M SF exhibition facility; the CORE Center, Chicago, a pioneering health center for the prevention, care, and research of infectious diseases; the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Chicago, a 400,000 SF higher-education building, featuring a 75-ft by 75-ft by 100-ft tall glass atrium, and the McDonnell Pediatric and Basic Cancer Research Building, an 11-story, research facility on the campus of Washington University School of Medicine. Sowlat holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree, both in Structural Engineering, from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Diebold has extensive experience with providing structural engineering for new construction, expansions, renovations, and forensics. Diebold offers expertise at solving particularly complex challenges of large structures, tall buildings, and long spans, presented with heavy loads and unique site conditions. Diebold holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture, a Masters degree in structural engineering, and an MBA, all from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
