DeSimone Consulting Engineering earned recognition for its innovative engineering on the new Olympia DUMBO residential tower in Brooklyn, NY, which ascends with a striking sail-shaped silhouette. This luxury tower combines cutting-edge design and functionality, featuring 175,000 square feet of high-end residences on a 70,000-square-foot podium. Highlights include NYC’s highest private outdoor tennis court, indoor and outdoor pools, and a themed children’s playground.
DeSimone’s collaboration with Hill West Architects and Workstead brought this architectural vision to life, addressing complex structural and facade challenges. The Concrete Industry Board of New York will honor the project with the 2024 Roger H. Corbetta Mid-Rise Award of Merit with Special Recognition, and the UK’s Society of Facade Engineering (SFE) has shortlisted DeSimone for the 2024 New Build International award.
The tower’s complex shape and sloping columns required a reimagined structural system, employing high-strength concrete and voided slabs for stability. Facade innovations include a customized precast concrete panel system for the podium and a unitized window wall for the tower, enhancing both aesthetics and sustainability. Prefabricated panels were shop-assembled with thermal insulation and weather barriers, improving energy efficiency and accelerating construction.
This ambitious project by Fortis Property Group sets a new standard in architectural and sustainable design, with its shimmering facade, panoramic views, and eco-conscious features.
