The NCSEA Special Awards are bestowed on individuals who exemplify outstanding service and commitment to the association and to the structural engineering field. These dedicated servants, committed volunteers, and industry leaders will be recognized and applauded at the Awards Celebration on Wednesday, February 16, at the NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit. Join us in celebrating this year’s honorees!

The 2022 SEI Standards Series will preview ASCE 7-22 as a 5-part series that reviews the changes from ASCE 7-16. This unique program includes a dialogue between the leaders and experts who develop ASCE 7 and a detailed technical presentation on the specific changes and three main hazards – Seismic, Wind & Tornado, and Snow/Rain. In addition, information will be provided on the ASCE 7 Digital Products/Hazard Tool. Attendees are encouraged to join the discussion for the extensive live Q&A portion of the session.

At ACEC’s 2021 Fall Conference, the Coalition of American Structural Engineers (CASE) awarded Celeste Carmignani a $2,500 CASE Scholarship.  Ms. Carmignani is working on a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit will be in New York City February 14-17 and online January 31-Feburary 24. The Summit offers unrivaled educational opportunities, an industry-leading trade show, and unique and fun networking opportunities.

The 2016 edition of ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7-16), has three published supplements. Supplement 1 was published on December 11, 2018, and was adopted into the 2021 International Building Code. Supplements 2 and Supplement 3 have been recently published, and all three are available in the ASCE Library as free downloads.

The ACEC Fall Conference was held from October 28-30, and CASE hosted a structural engineering roundtable that convened people from various firms around the country. Participants discussed trending issues, including workforce challenges, supply chain issues, and licensure.   

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit is heading to New York City February 14-17 and online January 31 to February 24 – and structural engineers everywhere will be saying “I Love Structural Engineering” this Valentine’s Day season. Reconnecting with your peers, learning from industry experts, networking with product experts at the trade show – what’s not to love!

The ASCE/SEI Nuclear Standards Committee is seeking new members to oversee the development of the next editions of three standards: 

• ASCE/SEI 1, Standard for Geotechnical Analysis, Design, Construction, Inspection and Monitoring of Nuclear Safety-Related Structures,
• ASCE/SEI 4, Seismic Analysis of Safety-Related Nuclear Structures, and
• ASCE/SEI 43, Seismic Design Criteria for Structures, Systems, and Components in Nuclear Facilities. 

CASE Tool 3-6: Career Path Planning

Career Path Planning is an important exercise that all firms should employ to better understand and document the strengths, weaknesses, and seniority of individual staff members and the depth of talent within the firm on a holistic level. This allows the firm to identify future recruiting needs as well as strengths and weaknesses within the current staff.

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit has a long history of bringing the structural engineering community together to network, learn, and celebrate the successes of our profession. It would have been difficult for the Summit to deliver on that purpose in October as originally planned. As a result, NCSEA has postponed the Summit – both the live event in New York and the virtual event – to February of 2022.
